authentic internal signature page from Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas.

The image features two key components:

1. The Signature: The stylized sweeping ink script in the middle is his handwritten signature, which flows abstractly into his initials "mny".

2. The Haida Manga Glyph: Below the signature, he has drawn a custom, hand-brushed remnant sketch or glyph. He frequently includes these spontaneous ink drawings when signing books for collectors, drawing on the bold lines characteristic of his signature

  • The Story: Based on a traditional Indigenous Quechuan parable from South America, the narrative follows a brave little hummingbird named Dukdukdiya. When a massive fire breaks out in her forest home, all the other large animals flee or watch in despair. Despite her size, the hummingbird flies back and forth tirelessly, carrying a single drop of water at a time in her beak to fight the blaze. Her actions serve as a powerful metaphor for individual action and environmental stewardship.
  • Artistic Style: The book is beautifully illustrated in Yahgulanaas's signature "Haida-Manga" style, which masterfully blends traditional North Pacific Indigenous formlines with the dynamic energy of graphic storytelling.
  • Notable Contributors: This edition features an inspiring foreword by Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai and an afterword on universal responsibility by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
